Trend Tuesday: An Overall Trend
I really don’t care that these titles are forced/not creative. I promised you play-on-words all month and I’m sticking to it (whether you wanted me to or not). When I first came up with the idea to do overalls this month, everyone laughed at me. Jon’s still laughing at me, but that’s not the point. Amy kind of laughed nervously when I told her. My friends couldn’t believe it was a trend. My mom reminded me how unflattering they are (no argument there). BUT WHO IS LAUGHING NOW?! Probably still a lot of you, but at least now you can see that I basically “Ask Zandar’d” the fashion industry because these things are everywhere.
Amy already told you about overalls being THE uniform of Coachella (reason #347 I should have joined her), my friend Jessy said they’re all over her Facebook newsfeed, this little number showed up in my inbox one fine morning last week:
Oh yeah, and every celebrity seemed to get the memo within the last week, including my #1 style crush Olivia Palermo:
So basically, overalls are a trend and I am queen of the universe. Or something. That being said, I’m kind of over (ha!) them already. Don’t get me wrong, they’re super comfortable and great when you’re just lazing around the house…until you need to go to the bathroom. They’re pretty perfect if you feel like you’re having a fat day, because they’re so unflattering no matter what you can just blame the overalls. Plus they’re so roomy that even if you gained a few pounds you wouldn’t notice.
I know it’s mixed messaging here, but let me put it to you this way: I’ll probably wear overalls even after this month’s blogging saga is over, I just can’t wait to stop thinking of innovative ways to dress them.
Which brings me to this post…it’s spring in New England and all I want to do is break out my new spring clothes. That being said, there’s only so many ways you can wear overalls, and I basically went the little kid route. You see, I was running errands on Monday and didn’t really feel like thinking a lot about my outfit. Then I remembered, “hey, I should probably do my ‘errands’ outfit now.” I spent this past weekend in Long Island with my family and to celebrate Easter and the end of Lent (read: I can online shop again), I went a little crazy with my wallet. I don’t know why, but something about the Long Island J. Crew is the best. They always have the best inventory and more often than not they have my size. Plus they have killer jewelry. AND they were having a sale. Dream. Come. True.
I kept the overall look (PUNS!) super basic, sticking with flats because who wants to wear heels while doing errands? You’ll notice I’m wearing a super tiny bag…I had been at the marathon earlier in the day and they had tight restrictions on bag size. Being that I usually carry my life in my purse I downsized and was too lazy to change.
I’m pretty sure I wore a similar outfit in my youth. Overalls? T-shirt? Flats? Yup. Granted, I didn’t have the budget for J. Crew statement necklaces and Givenchy sunglasses in my pre-teen years (Psh…I barely do now), but I’m sure this is a reincarnation of a comfy middle school outfit.
I wanted to stick with pale blues and grays to go with my spring feeling, although fun fact: the T-shirt is all business in the front and party in the back (if a T-shirt can be that). See?
Sure, the T-shirt is slouchy, but at this point, there’s no accentuating the figure when you’re wearing overalls. The name of the game is comfort and all I wanted to do is lie around on a hammock and nap in the sun. Or, you know, just general basking in the sun. Because you see, my friends, we probably have about two weeks left of this gorgeous weather. Then comes the blazing heat…which is still better than winter, but not great overall weather. That could lead to chafing, and WOOF.
I’m really nervous about my last outfit – the going out look. That’s right, if you see me at a bar this weekend, chances are I’ll be wearing overalls. I almost can’t wait for the comments. But hey, if it’s as much of a trend as I think it is, chances are I won’t be the only girl in the bar wearing overalls (hopefully). Then we can have a “who wore it better” but if I lose that will suck.
Anyway, I’d give this look an 8. In all honesty, running errands and being lazy is like the number one thing these overalls are good for, so of course they’d rank highly. Overalls are MADE for lazy weekends. And apparently Coachella. Are you hopping on the overall bandwagon yet?
