#NerdProm: Just Like High School, Except Not At All

Happy Met Ball Day, everyone! Oh, and Cinco de Mayo! Really, there’s a lot of reason to drink tonight and that’s something always worth celebrating. Of course, it’s also a Monday so this will make for a long week. While it’s officially prom season, quite possibly the only one anyone over the age of 18 cares about is the White House Correspondents Dinner. Regardless of political affiliation, I couldn’t help but check out all the fashion some of the guests brought to the party. Since I’ve been in a red carpet recap drought as of late, I am SO excited to kick it off again. So let’s get started.

Jessica Simpson in Carolina Herrera.

Jessica Simpson in Carolina Herrera.

Jessica Simpson, you tell those haters! After two pregnancies, Jessica is looking better than ever. I love that she chose a strapless dress to show off those toned arms. The dress isn’t bad either, it’s not particularly impressive, but it’s not bad. Kind of hate the hair. But given how awesome and confident she looks, I’m adding a bunch of extra style points.

Freida Pinto in Thakoon.

I’m not sure why the triangle cutout under the boobs is a growing trend (sorry, loyal followers, that will never make #TT), but here’s Freida Pinto giving it a shot. I’m not loving this color on her, I feel like it leads to an overall bland look. Perhaps if she had kept her hair down, it would have given this whole ensemble a little something extra. For now, we are left with boring.

Anna Chlumsky in unknown.

Speaking of underboob triangle cutout, here’s Anna Chlumsky trying it out in a monochrome look. Fun fact: girl had a baby last year and looks phenomenal. I’ve loved Chlumsky since “My Girl” and the lesser-known but equally awesome “Gold Diggers: The Secret of Bear Mountain,” but I since got into “Veep” and she has been killing it. Her death stare is unmatched, and this is coming from someone with a serious death stare.

Sofia Vergara in Romona Keveza.

If I’ve learned anything from watching countless red carpets, it’s Sofia Vergara loves showing off her famous figure. Yet then she goes and surprises me and chooses a more covered-up gown. I guess when you head to the White House it’s best to put the twins away. I mean seriously, look how high that neckline is. It’s practically prude on her.

Kristen Bell in Dolce and Gabbana.

Kristen Bell in Dolce and Gabbana.

What is this?! Somebody get Kristen Bell a seamstress, stat. The dress is way too long, it’s ill-fitting, it’s best-suited for winter and it’s just a disaster in general. Girlfriend, I’ve seen you wear so much better than this. I’m a little torn, it seems like people either went extremely covered up or had underboob cutouts. Can’t we get a happy medium?

Olivia Munn in J. Mendel.

Bombshell! I am loving this dress on Olivia Munn. I like that she kept the look clean overall, choosing minimal jewelry and unfussy hair. I’d love to see some closer shots of the detailing on the dress, but from far away it’s gorgeous. Also, if I had crazy arms like that I’d be flaunting them too!

Katherine McPhee in Paul Ka.

While the foundation may be a little much, I really like the color of this dress. I do have one major complaint, though: the clutch and the shoes are the same shade, but are just off from the trim of the dress, which has been bugging the crap out of me. If she had chosen a metallic, it would have been SO much better.

Taylor Schilling in Zuhair Murad.

Taylor Schilling in Zuhair Murad.

This dress gives me all sorts of flashbacks to Hilary Swank’s blue Guy Laroche gown when she picked up her second Oscar in 2005. At least this one has some lace cutouts, which are so hot right now, by the way. I really like this look on Taylor, I feel like she rarely has a red carpet win, so I was happy to see her thriving.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Antonio Berardi.

As I mentioned early, can’t stop won’t stop watching Veep, so I was super excited to see Julia not only at the Correspondents Dinner, but also in a hilarious video with none other than the actual veep, Joe Biden. I really like this dress on Julia, she’s in her 40s (but still looks awesome), so I don’t expect to see her in something super youthful. Brava!

But my best dressed has to go to…

Lupita Nyong'o in Oscar de la Renta.

LUPITAAAAA. Ever since she slightly disappointed me at the Oscars she’s been making it up and then some. Look at that bold pink lip color. I normally wish peplum would die in a fire, but this dress is amazing on Lupita’s figure. The girl knows how to dress and she paired her accessories flawlessly. A+ all around!

Did you check out Nerd Prom? I couldn’t stop laughing at some of the jokes.
