Billboard Music Awards: A Marked Improvement
Okay, so last year was kind of a disaster when it came to the red carpet of the Billboard Music Awards. In fact, I had to name Taylor Swift best dressed because there were literally no other choices. You know how I hate to be nice about Taylor Swift. So you can imagine my delight when I signed online and saw that the guests really brought it this year. Although I guess ugliness sells because that post remains our highest-viewed of all time. For real, people still search for it one year later.
I’m actually surprised that everyone, for the most part, dressed really well. Unfortunately, there were some heartbreakers from people who should know better.
The second I typed “I-G-G-Y” “Fancy” came back into my head, where it’s resided for the better part of the past two weeks. I’d be mad but it’s such a good song (haterz to the left). What I CAN hate is this outfit. Iggy has an amazing body, so why not show it off? Instead, she went with this weird gown that’s covered, but not really. I think it’d look a lot better without the lace, but maybe the weird halter neckline is just too awful. Shoulda worn a Clueless outfit.
I want to love this because I love Chrissy Teigen so much. I don’t know if it’s the combo of the structured mini with the blunt bangs, or if it’s the weird pattern placement, but something about this outfit just isn’t right. However, it doesn’t matter what I think because John Legend clearly likes what he sees (confirming my speculation that they’re one of the cutest couples in Hollywood). I think the biggest problem is I’ve seen Chrissy dazzle on the red carpet so many times…this just isn’t one of them.
J.Lo, why would you bother to wear a red dress with a cape a few months after Lupita Nyong’o knocked it out of the park? I hate statement capes anyway, except on Lupita, so I just really don’t see the point of this. Also, this is the Billboard Music Awards…which are like a poor man’s Grammys. No need to try and work a dramatic silhouette. I guarantee you that you would have been ranked higher on my list if you left the Red Riding look at home.
Dayummmnnn, Winnie Cooper. After rising from obscurity to join “Dancing With The Stars” (as most people who join Dancing With The Stars do), Danica McKeller has been wanting to show off her super fit figure. Who could blame her? If I had abs like that I’d be wearing more midriff tops than Gwen Stefani. My only complaint is her hair looks a bit too dirty. Either that or too much hairspray. Regardless, it kind of looks like a mess on top, but the rest is flawless.
If my dress didn’t fit either, I, too, would be making that pouty face. While I appreciate Nicki moving away from looking like anime on crack, she needs to make sure the fit on her designer gowns is perfect. As someone who also has a big chest, you want to stay away from too-small tops. Underboob is never cute. It just looks trashy – particularly on the red carpet. Other places, like the beach, you can’t help, but I would think the team at McQueen could’ve fixed this.
Her hips don’t lie, etc., etc. Seriously, Shakira, this dress leaves no room for error. Not only does it cinch the entire body, but it’s also see-through up the entire side. No room for muffin tops in this ensemble. I kind of wish she did a lighter heel. The ones she’s wearing look either suede or velvet and they’re black to top it off. Definitely more of a winter shoe, and it’s, like, 90 degrees in Vegas right now, so the shoes should match the weather. Other than that, all I can say is “get it, girl.”
I’ve seen what other blogs are saying about Carrie Underwood being their top pick, but I have to say I disagree. I think the hair is too much – nobody rocks loose country curls like Carrie, and this kind of looks like the kind of plume that belongs on a parrot. Also, not head over heels for the dress. Even the front hem is a bit too long. I understand the aspects of the train, but the whole thing looks like it could be taken in a couple of inches. This just looks like a sloppy chartreuse whatever.
Part of me thinks this outfit is made for an interview (at some really creative place and/or fashion magazine), but the other part of me really loves it. Maybe it’s because I’m so obsessed with the shoes, but this is kind of working for me. I can see why people would think it’s not the right look for the occasion, but I applaud Sarah for being different while still trying to have fun with fashion. Plus, those statement zippers give the entire outfit a little extra edge.
Here are Kendall “I can’t read” Jenner and Kylie Jenner looking like they’re in their mid-20s rather than, you know, their teenage years. For one: Kendall is probably the most gorgeous of all the Kardashian/Jenner clan…she doesn’t need loads of self-tanner or the same makeup artist as RuPaul. As a girl familiar with teenage angst, I can appreciate Kylie’s decision to experiment with her hair…I can just only imagine what Kimye will have to say about it in wedding photos, though.
This leads me to my Best Dressed pick (and it may surprise you):
A lot of unknown designers tonight…I’ve been dying to hear who made Ke$ha’s dress. Coming out of rehab following a battle with an eating disorder, Ke$ha looks better than ever. I love the light pink hair and the fresh face. Her body is also rocking, and she should always look to this photo if she ever starts to doubt herself, because she looks amazing. She also looks genuinely happy, which is great to see for someone who’s been struggling recently. She exudes confidence and I think she nailed the entire ensemble.
Well, that’s my wrap-up – who was your Best Dressed?
